[Oneshot] Wish

Author’s note: The plot just popped out in my head from nowhere. Purely my imagination on how they will celebrate Jaejoong’s birthday.

WISH by anthra_JJ

Yunho flips through the cooking book. Obviously cooking is not his forte. “What the heck is baking soda?” Yunho scratches his head. He picks up his smart phone and type “baking soda” in the search bar. Related images and sites pop out. “Ah, BAKING SODA!” Yunho exclaimed when he realizes that he had seen the white powder in a small bottle before when he did shopping in supermarkets. “But I didn’t buy it. Haiz,” Yunho sighs. How he’s gonna bake a cake without baking soda. Yunho go through his contact list and stopped at a certain name. He touched the dial icon and waits.

“Ne,hyung” deep voice answered the call.
“Changmin-ah, help me”
“Call me…” “Changmin HYUNG, jebal~” chuckles were heard on the other side.
“What is it that hyung wants so desperately?”
“Baking soda? Could you buy it on your way home. ASAP,”
“Mweo? Haiz~ araseo,” Changmin answered in annoyance and hung up the call.

Yunho slides his phone back into his pocket and sigh in relieve. He looked at the cooking book and a wide grin appears on his face.

Jaejoongie, saengil chukahae~

“Ahjumma, do you have baking soda here?” Changmin asks the shop owner. It’s a small shop in a less crowded area of Seoul so there’s no need for him to wear a mask. “Of course. Let me get it for you, son.” “Kamsahamnida,” Changmin bows slightly. He looks around the shop and something got his eyes. A small cactus plant on the window sill.

30 minutes later…

Changmin opens the door to find Yunho lying on the couch while watching TV.

“Oh wasseo?” Yunho rose after saw Changmin enters the apartment.
“20000 won, please” Changmin said as he takes off his shoes.
“Mweorageo? A small bottle of baking soda won’t cost that much, Shim Changmin!”
“Baking soda was only 2000 won,” Changmin hands over the small plastic bag to Yunho. “What’s in it?” Yunho asked, pointing at another bag that Changmin was holding.
“I need some snacks since I had walked all the way to a small store, waited for the ahjumma to ransack the whole store for the thing when it’s just beside the cashier’s desk, walked back to our headquarters and then was brought to our apartment by our manager,”

Yunho let a deep sigh. He knows very well that he have to pay for the snacks as well because if he didn’t, then the maknae won’t help him again. Yunho take out few notes and hand it to Changmin. “Here you go. Enjoy your snack time,” Yunho said with discontentment. Changmin just smiled and walks to his room.

Changmin place the bag on his desk and takes out the things one by one. Instant ramen, sweets, rice cakes and a small plastic box. Inside the box is a small cactus plant.

Jaejoong hyung, saengil chukahae~

*********************************************************************************************************************

“Hyung,” Junsu breaks the silence. Tonight, the apartment is quite eerily silent compared to many nights that they had spent together in the very same living space.
“Which hyung,Junsu-yah? Remember I’m your hyung too,” Yoochun said and smirks at Junsu. “I will never call you ‘hyung’, Yoochunnie. Well maybe in your dreams, yes.” Junsu answers and throws the cushion he was holding at Yoochun.

“Guys, please. Let me be in peace while waiting for the clock to strike 12,” Jaejoong said and looked at the clock on the wall. 3 more minutes.

“Any ideas on how the fans will celebrate Jaejoong hyung’s birthday?” Yoochun continue having a conversation with Junsu, ignoring the older guy who is resting his head against the black leather couch with eyes closed.

“Cut cakes maybe? Or make cards for him? I don’t know,” Junsu answers Yoochun’s question without even looking at him. He rolls the papers in his hands and murmurs something that was barely could reach Yoochun’s eardrum.

“Junsu-yah, put your rehearsing for your musical on hold. Just for tonight. We have things to do,” Yoochun remarks on Junsu’s lack of attention on their conversation.

“I think the fans would do something techie such as updating their Cyworld or homepage with birthday wishes for Jaejoong. And Twitter! They can trend something like hash tag happybirthdayjejung,” Yoochun came up with some ideas.

“They will do that?”

The clock strikes 12 am and as spontaneously, both Yoochun and Junsu jumps on Jaejoong, giving him a combined beastly hug.

“Saengil chukahae,hyung!”

“Happy Birthday,man!”

“Enough with your English and bring out the cake,Junsu” Yoochun orders Junsu. Jaejoong only smiles at their acts. He knew very well that both of them trying not to let him feeling blue on his birthday. But how could he’s not sad when he can sense the utmost absence around him. Jaejoong wants not 4 arms but 8 arms snake him while wishing “Happy Birthday”.

Junsu mumbles something and slaps Jaejoong’s cheeks gently before walking into the kitchen. Minutes later he’s return with a small chocolate cake with candles lit on. After Junsu placed the cake on the coffee table, Jaejoong can see clearly the arrangement of the candles. There are five candles and placed in a form of ‘W’.

“Make a wish, hyung. Better be a good one. Like “I wish Junsu to have a girlfriend this yea” Eun Kyang Kyang~” Junsu cracks his legendary laughter. “Such a selfish kid,” Yoochun comments on Junsu’s wish.

Junsu and Yoochun knew what Jaejoong will wish for. It would be the same wish that he keep wishing in the past 2 years. They tried so hard to uplift Jaejoong’s mood but seems like Jaejoong already forgot how to celebrate birthday cheerfully. Maybe Jaejoong will when the day that all three of them expecting arrives.

Jaejoong looks at the cake and warm tears formed at lower fold of his eyelid. He closes his eyes immediately and makes a wish.

I wish the other two are with me now~

*********************************************************************************************************************

Changmin stares at the cake with lust. He constantly licks his dry lips. Changmin wants to savour the chocolate cake that is decorated with thinly sliced almonds and strawberries but deep inside him, a fear revolves within the poor soul.

Can Shim Changmin trust his leader’s cooking skills?

“Haiz,” Changmin sighs and drops his head on the table. Yunho paused the game he was playing in his handphone and looks up at Changmin. “Wae geurae?”

“Hyung, did you follow the instructions precisely? I mean, there’s no room for errors like using salt instead of sugar, right?”

“Come on,Changmin. Although I’m a bad cook, I knew that this cake is meaningful for both of us,”

Changmin nods slowly and continue staring at cake. “1 more minute,” Yunho said as an alarm goes off in his phone. Yunho lets out a deep breath and lights the candles. There are five candles and carefully placed to form a “W”.

The clock strikes 12 and Changmin and Yunho looks at each other. Soft murmurs of “Saengil Chukahae,Jaejoongie,” and “Saengil Chukahae, hyung” were heard. All of a sudden, gust of wind from the nearby open window blows the candles off.

We wish the other three are with us now~

Disclaimer: If I owned DBSK, I wouldn't be alive to write this.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

[Set to “Already One Year” by Brown Eyes]

“Earlier today, TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki got together on stage to hold a concert at the Hongkou Soccer Stadium in Shanghai, China. Despite the turmoil, rumors of breakup, and lawsuit with SM Entertainment, the boys got together and put on a great show for the more than 30,000 fans in attendance.

According to fan accounts, TVXQ’s leader Yunho said: “The five of us will never part!” Even though the concert was held in China, this lead the crowd to chant “믿어요! 동방신기 사랑해” which translates to “Believe! We Love Dong Bang Shin Ki.” Jaejoong, and Micky were both seen crying around this time as well. There’s also a report that all 5 cried together at the end.”

It’s been more than a year since that day in Shanghai and the banners that they had held up for the five of them were still vividly engrained into his memory. He remembers how all of them felt, how everything was just so bittersweet.

“Hyung, I’m going out for a while. Will you be okay?” Changmin says quietly from the mouth of his bedroom door, his appearance rather solemn.

“Go ahead. I’ll be fine, Changmin-ah…” Yunho replies curtly.

Yunho hears the front door open and shut as Changmin leaves into the night. He stares blankly at the computer screen, a weary expression marking his face. The dull glow of the screen flickers in the darkness as he gets lost in his own thoughts. How did he even think that it was possible? They haven’t talked to each other in almost a year now and yet, he promised the fans that they’d never part?

Such lies, they all were. The past year has been a mess to say the least. He had never been so free in his entire life. He thought he would love the rest but…this feeling, this situation… It was something totally different than anything he’d ever experienced. Ironically, he never guessed that he’d actually miss the hustle and bustle that used to accompany the festive season. For once, he’d basically spent Christmas at home instead of on a plane.

A lone Christmas tree sat in the corner of their living room with barely any presents under it. He forgot that presents used to be Jaejoong’s thing so this year neither he nor Changmin bothered with it all. What was the point of it anyway? Neither of them were truly happy with everything right now.

Yunho sighs as he looks at the clock as it strikes twelve. Raising his wine glass in a toast to no one in particular, he whispers…

“Hana, deul, seh… Dong Bang Shin Ki imnida. Happy anniversary. I miss you guys so much.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------

“Honesty is honestly
The hardest thing for me right now
While the floors underneath our feet
Are crumbling, the walls we built together tumbling
I still stand here holding up the roof
Cause it's easier than telling the truth”

Changmin smirks at the lyrics of the song on the radio. Honesty is always the best policy so what are they even thinking about in this song?

“But if that were true Changmin, then why do you never seem to be honest about your own feelings? Why are you here, driving alone in the middle of the night? Where are you going?” A quiet voice points out to him.

He hated his demons for being what they were. The inner Changmin was so annoying sometimes.

This past year, he had fully thrown himself into individual activities. Acting, modelling, dancing and English lessons filled up the hours in the day while 4 to 5 nights at the gym kept his mind preoccupied. He had become a hermit as he slowly but surely reduced his time with the outside world. It was something he knew his fans would surely miss. Heck, he even read their complaints as he randomly looked through fansites occasionally. He just couldn’t face them. This was his way to avoid having to lie to the people who loved him so dearly. Even in interviews for the Japanese magazines, he’d always made sure to answer cryptically so that probably some fans could get what he was trying to say without having to actually say it.

Changmin’s car expertly weaves through the streets of Seoul as he heads for that one spot at the Han River. One spot he knew was still secluded enough to be unknown to the sasaengs. He needed his thinking time again. Seeing Yunho so depressed before just made everything worse.

Once he arrives at his destination, Changmin parks the car and just sits in his seat, staring out into the black night. It was cold outside but his heart was colder. The silence was what he really needed to calm his nerves.

It was now 3am and for some reason, Radio 21 was blasting from his stereo. The lyrics of Chajatta filled the inner cavity of the car and it made him furious. He switches off the radio as he leaves his car, stomping over to the river bank. He takes a deep breath and shouts at the top of his lungs.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Fuck you guys for leaving us! Fuck you for making everything messed up. Fuck you for…just fuck. I fucking hate you!!”

White puffs of air leaves him as his heavy breath mingles with the cold winter night. He didn’t mean what he said…then again, maybe he did? He never swore but all the things that were crappy in his life right now were too much for him to handle. He hated not being in control, not knowing what was ahead. He was tired, even though he should be happy that he’d be on stage once again. But it wasn’t the same.

He returns to his car and opens a can of beer. Another thoughtful look graces his handsome features as he realizes that he still feels the same about his three hyungs.

“I still hate you. Happy anniversary.” He mutters as he downs his can of beer alone.

“Correction. You only hate them because you miss them like hell.”

Like he said before, inner Changmin is very annoying at times.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

“Jaejoong hyung… Your tree is so empty. Aside from the decorations, there’s pretty much nothing else. Where are the presents?” Junsu points out to the elder man.

Jaejoong shrugs at the question, as if it was nothing new. “Hmmm… Honestly, I didn’t know what to get. Besides, what’s the point? I live here alone, with Jiji. And that prince gets more presents than I do these days.”

“That is true. That’s why I told you to bring the food and leave Jiji behind.” Yoochun says cheekily.

“Do you have a death wish or something Yoochunnie?” The elder man’s glare bores into the side of Yoochun’s face as the younger one looks to Junsu for help.

“Don’t look at me.” Junsu puts his hands up defensively.

The room is suddenly quiet as each of them fall into silence. Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu. JYJ. It just wasn’t the same.

“I miss Yunho and Changmin. I miss my servant.” Junsu thinks aloud, his hand absentmindedly swirling the glass of orange juice. “Orenji Junsu,” he adds quietly.

“Thanks for pointing that out, Captain Obvious. Without your superb observational skills, we would have never realised it…” Yoochun sends a dead-panned stare to Junsu’s way.

“You sound like that brat maknae.” Says Junsu as he scrunches his nose in distaste.

“Yah~ Play nice. We all miss them, don’t we? Yunho and the maknae. I wonder what they’re doing right now?” Jaejoong smiles bitterly.

“Probably out drinking with the staff, like we are.” Yoochun adds in simply.

“We could hardly be called as such, Yoochunnie.” Jaejoong interjected.

The apartment was empty apart from the four warm bodies that filled it, three humans and one prince. Christmas was quiet this year, unlike any of their previous ones. Out of all the paths they had chosen, this was definitely the hardest. But they had no time to regret it or even to look back. All they could do is to keep on moving forward into the unknown future. They truly believe that things will work out in the end.

“Assa! Let’s make a toast. To the future!” Yoochun holds up his glass of soju and motions to the other two.

“To our two friends that we love so much!” Jaejoong added in happily as he clinked his glass together.

“To Dong Bang Shin Ki! May we rule the world some day! Eu kyang kyang~” Junsu laughed heartily, spilling his juice in the process.

“I think we almost already do. At least to the fans we do.” Yoochun added matter-of-factly.

“Oh shut up, Yoochun. Happy anniversary!” Jaejoong and Junsu said simultaneously and with that they burst out laughing despite their sadness.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

4:30am
Five phones glowed in the dark night. Most were on vibrate so they wouldn’t see that message till the next morning. But it was something that they would need for the rest of their journey.

“Oppa fighting, we'll always wait for you…”
